The P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic educational society, was established on January 21, 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan University, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Chapter D, the first of five Grand Forks, N.D. chapters of P.E.O., was established in 1913. Chapter D charter members included Ada Bek, Chrissie Budge, Lillian Budge, Mable French, Margaret Gillette, Eva Libby, Carrie Simpson, Leila Sturtevant and Gertrude Sturtevant. Carrie Ester (Bonebrake) Simpson was born on November 1, 1879 in Knoxville, Iowa, the daughter of Peter Bonebrake and Jessie Fremont (Craddick) Bonebrake. She graduated from Cornell with an A.B. degree in 1903. In December of that same year, she married Howard Edwin Simpson. After their wedding, they departed for Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Howard earned a M.A. at Harvard University.
